Herbert L. Anderson. a physicist who was a pioneer in the development of nuclear energy and the atomic bomb. died of berylliosis at 74. He had contracted the lung disease in early nuclear experiments.

For his achievements in nuclear physics. Anderson received the Department of Energy's highest scientific honor. the Enrico Fermi Award. in 1983. Anderson received a doctorate in from Columbia University in 1940.

He was a close associate of Enrico Fermi. recipient of the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics. who was one of the chief architects of the atomic bomb. HAMDEN. Conn.

Eleanor Estes. an author of children's books, died at 82 of complications following a stroke. Her first book was "The Moffats. written in 1941. and an instant hit.

It illustrated the life of a family of four children growing up in a small New England town. Two other books about the Moffats followed. The most popular of her 19 books. many of which she illustrated herself. was "The Hundred Dresses." a tale about a poor child who is ridiculed for her tattered clothing and who insists that she owns 100 dresses.

They turn out to be drawings. and when they Win a prize. the girl's tormentors are abashed and perhaps reformed. LISBON Jose Manuel Braga Santos. one of Portugal's leading composers and a conductor, died of a heart attack at 64.

His six symphonies. as well as overtures. opera and choral works have been performed by orchestras in Europe. the United States and Japan. PRINCETON.

N.J. Lester V. Chandler, 82. an adviser to federal government agencies during World War TI and an author of several books on the economy. died here of leukemia.

Chandler was a monetary expert who worked with the Office of Price Administration during the war. He also consulted for the Secretary of War. the Army Finance School and the National War Labor Board. He taught at Dartmouth and Amherst Colleges before joining the Princeton University. faculty in 1950.

He served twice as Princeton's economics department chairman. Chandler's books include "The Economics of Money." "Economic Processes and Policies." "Benjamin Strong. Central Banker" and "America's Greatest Depression 1929-1941." SAN FRANCISCO Dr. Marsden S. Blois an expert in the field of melanoma and skin cancer, died at 69 cancer.

In 1957, he was identified as a pioneer i in the new field of biophysics when he read his report on the connection between molecular fragments and skin cancer at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society. Blois continued his work in skin cancer as a professor of dermatology at UC-San Francisco beginning in 1969. He published more than 100 books and research papers in his fields.
